How To Harness the Excitement of a Vacation When Business Planning

Friday, August 11, 2017

Let’s talk about an important topic for most leadership teams. That’s vacation.

When I get together with leadership teams, the first things I check in with them about are accomplished goals, company wins, or personal positive news in their lives. I'm always amazed at the places people go on family vacations, the excitement in their voices, and the amount of planning they put into their excursions.

After a while, I began scratching my head wondering why don't we have the same level of excitement when we plan for our companies?

Imagine the excitement you have planning your family vacation. You can take the same mindset and bring it into your business planning by asking these questions:

Where are we going and why?

The first thing you want to figure out with your team is where you want your business to go and why. You want to see where the destination is going to be on the map and then you can envision what it's going to be like. Figure out the destination, or goal, that inspires you, your team, and your employees.

What resources do we need?

Once you have the destination in mind, you can figure out how you are going to get there and plot your journey Ask yourself:
  • What is the methodology behind your journey?
  • What are your goals and tactics?
  • Who is going to be on the team?
  • What obstacles may you encounter?
For a smoother trip, it’s important to think out with great detail what the specific steps along the way could be.

How will we track our progress?

Finally, companies need to figure out how they are going to give themselves feedback along the way while they are en route to their destination. Are we on time? What time is the train or plane coming in? This is how you ensure you are staying on track to reach your final destination.
